Safety Tips for All Propane Users
When compared with other petroleum products, propane is one of the safest alternative fuels available today. One of the reasons why propane is so safe is because it has a very narrow range of flammability. Another reason is that propane won’t ignite when combined with air unless the source of ignition reaches at least 940 degrees Fahrenheit—in contrast, gasoline will ignite when the source of ignition reaches just 430 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, just because propane is considerably safer than other petroleum products doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t exercise caution when using, storing, and transporting it. To help keep you safe, here are a few tips from your friends at Lin-gas Propane:
- If you smell a gas leak, immediately evacuate everyone from the building and call your local propane supplier or the fire department. If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank before evacuating.
- Be sure to have your propane gas equipment periodically inspected for possible leaks or malfunctioning parts. Call Lin-gas today to ensure that your entire propane system is leak-free and in good working order.
- Never place your head near or directly over the valves on your propane storage tank. The propane liquid that is stored in your tank or cylinder can cause severe frostbite if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes.
- Never leave a propane tank in your vehicle. If your tank is left or stored in your vehicle, heat and sunlight can increase the pressure inside to an unsafe level, creating a flammable and explosive environment. In addition, be sure to always keep the cylinder or storage tank in an upright position.
